Lady Hastings

Lady Anne Hastings was a social climber, but wasn't quite at the same level was other women in the Tudor Court. Perhaps Anne was clever and ambitious but she was not quite as smart or well educated as some of the other women around her.

Anne Stafford, also known as Lady Hastings, was a cousin of Henry VIII. It is widely accepted that Henry and Anne had an affair in 1510 when Katherine was pregnant for the first time, though there is no firm evidence that this is true. There is evidence of flirtation and evidence that Katherine became furious with Henry around this time, but that could have been because he dismissed one of her favorite ladies in waiting, Anne's sister Elizabeth, from court. Further evidence to suggest that the affair did happened lies in the fact that Anne's husband, Lord George Hastings, ended up sending Anne to a nunnery, though they continued to exchange of affectionate letters. Regardless, for the purposes of this musical, they were having an affair.
