Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

Rating: ★★★★

I absolutely tore through Ugly Love. The writing leads smoothly from sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph. The alternating perspectives and writing styles pushed me to continue reading even when the story started to drag a bit. I particularly enjoyed the sections from young Miles's perspective. His relationship with Rachel was so different from any typical romance novel relationship. I was not a big fan of the sections from Tate's perspective. First of all, I think her name is weird. It sounds kind of dirty and not in a sexy way. Despite the name I really didn't like her as a character. She was very one dimensional and was clearly designed to serve the plot as a sexual object and love interest to Miles. The ending kind of redeemed all that for me, because Miles is really the protagonist, not Tate, but I still wish she were a more three-dymentional character.

Favorite Quotes:

"If someone told you they could get rid of the ugly stuff, but you'd lose all the other stuff, too... would you do it?" (290).

"Some people... they grow wiser as they grow older. Unfortunately, most people just grow older" (291).

"'That's...' he points to Claire's nursery and tries to speak but it takes him several tries to get his sentence out. 'That's his sister,' he finally says, blowing out an unsteady breath. 'Rachel, you gave him a sister'" (299).

I absolutely loved the ending of this. I loved that Rachel wasn't dead. I loved the end of their (Rachel and Miles's) relationship. I was worried that Miles's outlook on life wasn't justified, but it was. I loved that. I loved the chapter from Rachel's perspective when Miles goes to get closure. It was amazing, and it made the ending of the story unique from all the other mainstream romances out there. Finally, I loved that Cap knew Miles basically his whole life. I think Cap, as a character, was a brilliant choice. He's kind of detached from the story, but still connected. He allows the characters to vent, but he doesn't solve all their problems. I want him to be my elevator operator.
